Drama like ours
I have just seen the last episode of “Families like ours”, wherein the country of Denmark is being closed and everyone has to leave.
I did have a lot of thoughts watching through the episodes, the most dominant ones being:
- It focused a lot more on individuals than I would like. (This is typical for Danish TV)
- There was no online element: no social media, no instant messaging. Only SMS and phones. This was definitely written by boomers.
- The message seems to be: don’t follow your dreams, not even if you have money. Moving around internationally is all about the work permits.
- The only wealth that mattered was real estate. It seems like noone at the time would own international stocks, and furniture and art also wasn’t taken into account. Of course everyone lost everything if the only wealth that matters is the wealth you can’t move.
- For some reason the window of opportunity to leave the country was only a couple of days. This makes no sense if the whole point of evacuating the country was that it should be planned thoughtfully.
- Everyone in the series made the wrong choice whenever they had to make one.
- People not wanting to leave was definitely not in focus. Other than a single scene with a few protestors it seemed like everyone just accepted and left.
It’s insterresting, because a situation like this would definitely open up many more story options, so focusing a whole season of a series on just a few characters seems a bit of a waste.
Now, don’t get me wrong. It was still a very good watch, and I’m certain that all of my points was decisions made to move the drama in a direction the Director inteded. But that just wasn’t how I would have made it.
